One big, friendly *hello* to my new followers from the Labor Day weekend BBQ. If you don't see me on your side of the bloggerhood, just drop me a message. I probably couldn't find your link.
My *100 followers contest* ends this Friday. If you follow, and comment on the contest post, I'll enter your name in the draw.
Now on to Memoir Monday...
I didn't ask my dad to rent a pony for my party. Doesn't that sound unappreciative? I cannot picture a girl who wouldn't want a pony at her birthday, except me.
Shetland Ponies look like they've been plucked right out of a fairy tale, see...
I should have hopped on his back and ridden him to the land of snowflakes and hot cocoa. In my fictional life, I would have taken a gallop along the irrigation ditch, under the solid green leaves of our sycamore, to the sound of cheering party-goers. In my real life, I screwed up my forehead, and watched the other kids go first. Did I have to get on too? I did, and it was an awkward, uneventful moment where I couldn't get the beast to move. Tsk, tsk.
The rest of the party - delicious cake and ice cream, gifts, friendly faces, games - was overpowered by Mr. Lovely, chomping on weeds in the yet-to-be-landscaped half of the back yard.
In the end, my mom asked all the children to draw me a birthday picture. I don't remember if I invited plenty of classmates, so maybe my mom's friend's son was there to boost the numbers. No matter. In typical boy fashion, he drew me an elaborate, detailed picture of Mr. Lovely's poo. If I still had it, I would post it for you, but sadly, I burned it.
I'm just joking! Do I seem like that type? Oh heavens, I hope not. Are any of you afraid of adorable ponies?

Oh come on now, what would ever make you want to burn a hand drawn picture of pony poo? ;) That's a great story!
Sounds like that boy had a wry sense of humour. I wonder if he blogs now or sells his poo pictures for ridiculous sums of money at Tate Modern?
Thanks for stopping by and following my blog
Hi~ I found you at Karen's BBQ (thanks for coming to see my blog!). The only thing I have to say is that your Louisa May Alcott quote brought a huge smile to my face, so thanks!
Love the pony picture. My friend is a barrel racer and she had a pony like this (not one she raced, of course).
Hi Michelle-- Congrats on getting 100 followers... looks like you're well on your way to 200! I just followed you! I LOVE the pony picture... my daughter's birthday is in a few weeks so I'm thinking about getting her one to ride... she'd LOVE that.
That boy sounds like a boy I was friends with when I was a kid. He was such a tease.
Sounds like a childhood crush to me. You know boys show things in really weird ways @ that age :)
I love the pony picture. I had a pony I rode when I was little. Being from Kentucky you cannot be afraid of horses :D

That is one awesome mane!
I love memoirs, and am enjoying reading your "scenes."

Great pix. What a special (hehe) memory you've shared here. I never wanted a pony at a birthay party either, and probably b/c of the poo they'd leave behind. That, and Shetlands always struck me as weird looking.
I think they're gorgeous now that I'm all grown up, but back then - nah.

Hi MT,
Lovely pic of the horsie ;)
I absolutely love horses no matter what breed. I did have one when I was a kid. My sister adopted a mare from a rescue group not long ago. She pampers her, that's her baby. My hubby takes me to horse shows because he knows how much I adore them. So, I guess my answer to your question goes without saying. ;)
Poo! Just the sound and sight of that word makes me laugh. Then again, as a little a girl, it wouldn't have and I'd have burned the picture too!
Thanks for the laugh today, Michelle!
I don't particularly like riding horses. I've been bucked off twice, once in a sharp bush. Maybe one day I will like to ride again. Maybe. =)
Hi Michelle! Nice to meet you through the BBQ. :)
I've always liked horses, but maybe it's because I haven't been around too many real ones and have never had to clean up their poop. Who knows.
Today at our local State's Day parade, there was a huge mariachi band and about 20 men riding dancing horses. It was spectacular! And then, for extra fun, there was a little boy on a tiny little dancing pony. So adorable! I was about ready to bring that pony home. Or at least, my fictional self was ready to. The real me would probably not like him nibbling my butterfly bush. :)

Lovely story!
Karen G's BBQ has been a great way to catch a lot of great new blogs!
Thanks for visiting my blog and following! I love the cute little birds on your layout :)
Ha ha ha! I think they are adorable, but then I've never tried to ride one. :-)
Just goes to show you that boys are way different than girls starting from day one! Great story.
I'm not afraid of the ponies, but I have a son who would rather chew nails than climb on one! :)
Yes, I would be afraid to get up on a pony, in case it took off.
On Santorini, Greece, i walk up 300 steps in mid-day heat, rather than get up on a donkey- now I think I was daft, but at the time, just couldn't get up the courage.
Thanks for stopping by my place from the BBQ!
