Smack dab in time for Valentines Day, author Jody Hedlund has agreed to donate a signed copy of her inspirational historical romance The Preacher's Bride!

I'll be blunt: I don't like romances. However, I like Jody, so I hesitantly gave this a try and surprised myself - I absolutely loved The Preacher's Bride. I can hardly wait to read The Doctor's Lady which came out last fall.

Debut Author Challenge 2012

I wonder if The Story Siren calls this the Debut Author Challenge because it's so challenging to find a debut author...just kidding. There are plenty of 2012 debut authors, but I'm sort of picky about what I read.

However, I found an interesting fantasy middle grade book called The Cabinet of Earths by Anne Nesbet.

Sarah Prineas, author of the Magic Thief series says this about it...

"Reading this book is like discovering a treasure box full of rare and wonderful things. If you open it, you'll find a brave and good-hearted girl hero, the mysterious streets of Paris, and a magical cabinet full of life itself. The writing is luminous and absolutely compelling. It's the best thing I've read in a long, long time."

And I'll add that Nesbet's characters are strong and memorable. So many times I struggle to keep characters straight - I have to go back several pages to refresh my memory, which isn't an issue this time.

Where Are We?

Remember how popular Forks, Oregon became after the release of Twilight? Many of the books we read take place in phony cities, but the real ones are fun to investigate.

So guess...I'll give you clues and you try to figure out which city-from-a-book we're in today.

Population: less than 400

Shopping: Walmart is a thirty minute drive, or 20 miles away.

Recreation: Summit Lake, pictured here, is only ten minutes away, or five miles. You can go boating, camping, fishing and swimming.

Weather: Just your average mid-west weather, but they're in tornado alley, and keep a record of more than twice the state average number of tornadoes. Yikes!

Crime: Below average.

Real estate: You can find a home on a big piece of land for less than 190K - sometimes much less.

Notables: Inventor Wilbur Wright, athlete Vern Huffman, and author Haven Kimmel

Music for the Written Character

It was a privilege to grow up with Charlie Brown specials on television. I could relate to the boy, and he's probably responsible for my intense desire to root for the underdog.

I'll never forget Schroeder playing the piano while everyone danced on stage, avoiding Pig Pen's cloud of dust. Nor will I forget Snoopy's cry, or Woodstock's loyalty. And boy, did I hate Lucy!

Did you know Charlie Brown starred in the Peanut's comic strip beginning in 1950?

What's Cool at the Book Store

The book store is an appealing place for more than just books these days. After I browse through the novels, I crave a scone and hot cocoa from the cafe while I peruse the gift aisles.

What's cool at the book store this month? Journals.

Journals used to be kind of boring. I wrote in several as a teen, but they were mostly plain blue, brown, white, or red - with the word "Journal" written in gold calligraphy on the front.

At the time, they were appreciated, I promise. But now, when I take a trip to the bookstore, I am amazed at the variety of unique journals and notebooks.

Looks Like a Book

People are creative with books - and not just the authors.

I've been looking for book art, expecting to see a lot of framed illustration work, yet surprised and pleased at the variety of art I actually found.

I was also shocked by the negative reaction. Apparently some people think this type of art is disrespectful to both books and their authors. Not me!

Face it - people don't read novels often. Despite the popularity of e-readers, an extremely small percentage of the world's population has access to one.

Let's pretend for a moment that we are not reading fanatics. *gasp* If you saw a piece of art like this, would it nourish a small seed of interest within your soul? Would you be more inclined to pick up a real book? Possibly.

This is good, not bad.

A Pessimist's Guide to Optimism

When we lived in Arizona, the local news did a story on roof rat issues in nearby neighborhoods.

They only need a hole the size of a quarter to get into your house.

They're good climbers.

They nest in trees and attics.

They will eat your oranges right off the tree.

One day we discovered something dark swimming in our pool and wondered if it was the dreaded pest. Upon closer inspection, we discovered it was just a mouse. The mouse, with his black, beady eyes, literally squeaked for help when he saw us. He couldn't get out. We helped him. I'm not sure why.

The point? At least it wasn't a roof rat.

I am an optimism convert - yes, there were times when I glared at cheerful people, and would rather trip them than hold the door open. However, becoming an optimist isn't as bad as it seems. If you're considering a switch from pessimism, start here...

Lesson #1: Concentrate on the bad things that didn't happen.

Practice off and on for a month, and come back for step two in February. K, bye.

KM Weiland's Wordplay

Looking at this young face, one wouldn't expect her to know so much about writing. But not only does she know her stuff, she's at the top of my list if you ask me Who's your mentor?

KM Weiland runs Wordplay, a blog geared toward new writers. What's so great about that? you say? There are tons of those kinds of blogs. I know. I've seen them too.

BUT, Weiland doesn't act like a know-it-all, looking down from her lofty position, granting us great wisdom and direction. She doesn't spew on about her accomplishments, or put on a show.

She's does act like a friend, with the map, willing to share. She also makes things fun with vlog posts and unique giveaways.

I asked her a question via email last week, and she responded quickly, with genuine information - not just a copy and paste answer. I was touched by her help, and grateful for the encouragement.

Author Spotlight: J Scott Savage

Far World has been around for a few years, and I still remember it! That's saying something, because I usually forget titles, authors and details within a year or two of reading a book - which is nice if I want to read it again some day, but not nice when I start wondering what that means when I'm 80.

J. Scott Savage is a friendly, local author who has written both Water Keep and Land Keep in the Far World series. It's been a while since he's written anything else that I'm aware of, but if you're looking for a fun fantasy read that you probably haven't previously heard of, try this one.

Famous Film Festivals

There is a famous film festival, not to far from here, that's about to take place. January 19-29, 2012 to be specific - The Sundance Film Festival has been held in Utah since 1978, giving a chance for independent filmmakers to show off their stuff. It's the place to be seen or discovered.

Strange how I've never been, even though I grew up here. It always makes the news, and celebrity buffs clamor to Park City to see who they can see.

Have you been? Park City is a fun winter vacation spot - skiing for all levels, restaurants, and this festival.

Do you know of any other famous film festivals in the world? I'm remembering one in particular (thank you, Mr. Bean). Can you think of it?

How to Detect a Sneaky Sneak

After two holiday giveaways, I am reminded of a line from Princess Diaries: "Me? A princess? Shut up!" Why these lines? Because she never says shut up again. Her grandma, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, teaches her that manners matter.

On that note, I'd like to share a few pointers that will help you navigate the streets of the bloggerhood. I bet you already know them, but we can gather 'round, pat each other on the back, and confirm one another.

When someone says hello, say hello back, preferably on their blog, since it is unlikely they'll return to this same comment thread to see if you replied.

In real, face-to-face time, saying hello may be intimidating for some. Not so much on-line.

When someone is holding a giveaway, are you the kind who simply leaves your name and email address in the comment section? If so, you highly resemble a thief in the night who is only there to take. It is unattractive.

Bloggers love to meet similar bloggers that make genuine, friendly connections.

What about comments that say I'm a new or long time follower but...not. They may look like they're jumping through the hoop, but it's pretty easy for a blog post author to double check a profile.

I can think of one exception - those who follow with their Twitter account (it doesn't show up on the list of blogs they follow).

Now for a few last pointers...

Make your profile public and give us a way to reach you - use a pen name if it feels better.

Don't just take. Give back, and try to be creative about it.

Say thank you when your prize arrives.

Load a picture onto your profile - it doesn't have to be your face, but that anonymous blue square puts you at the bottom of the followers list, unseen.

Visit your new follower's blogs. Here are some reasons I don't follow back: when I cannot find their blog, they post pictures of nearly naked folks, they have a content warning, they're creepy, they ramble, they rarely update their blog, or they decorate their blog with things that significantly slow down my computer.

Ah, now I feel better. Thanks for hearing me out! Do you have anything you'd like to add to the list that will help us avoid sneaky sneaks (or acting like one)?

Author Spotlight: Richard Peck

Have you heard of A Long Way from Chicago, and its sequel A Year Down Yonder? They're both among my favorite upper middle grade reads, and Richard Peck (not to be confused with author Richard E. Peck) is a genuine, friendly author who appreciates his fans. I met him at The King's English Bookshop a year or two ago, and was so grateful for the time he took with each person standing in line. He is quite prolific, and a list of his many works can be found here. You'll have to let me know what you think. I've suggested his books to my MIL and she didn't like them at all! Oh well. To each his own, right?

These many weeks we've enjoyed the answers children give to the question What kind of books does this author write? Now I'd like to give you a chance to guess. There's just one problem...you can cheat so easily, either by mousing over the picture, or viewing the properties, and ka-boom, there's the author's name. So try to guess before you peek...

The funnest part is the reasoning behind the guess. It usually makes no sense! I hope you don't recognize any of them, though I'm taking a chance with one. If you don't know how to cheat, I'll give you the answers on Thursday.

Hmmm...What to do...

I've been searching for nifty stuff to do in my own state of Utah, as well as around the US - not that I'd be able to go to them all *sadly* but that I might appreciate what people have to offer through literature, music, art, and other creative methods.

In early August, I discovered my local Davis County Fair sponsored a Read and Win, offering free rides to kids who read a certain number of books. Later I found the Moab Music Festival in southern Utah, September's SD Book Festival, and the UVU Book Academy in October. I wish I could go to this month's AZ Balloon Classic!

Artist, Crystal Cook

I'll be blunt. I like Crystal for too many reasons to name, but here's a few...

She keeps things fresh with different mediums and subjects
She interviews other artists
She shares her experiences at art shows and classes
She shows the stages of her work
She sells her work
Best of all, she is genuine and kind
Oh, and she writes. Cool.

I met Crystal through Blogger, and then found out she lived just a few miles away from me *small world*. We started chatting, and even saw each other in the store occasionally. I've appreciated her work since day one, and ached to win a piece when she generously held a contest to give a custom work away. Hey Crystal, are you ever going to do that again?

If she used Twitter, she'd be on my I'm A Fan list, and I'm really picky about who I put on that list. Since she's not on Twitter, I can at least like her Facebook page, and so can you, for regular updates on her work.

An Awesome Ode

A few months ago I posted Me? Creative? and expressed my belief that we can all overcome obstacles in order to be creative in a variety ways. Then I followed up with examples: Capoeira, a martial arts dance group, the Co-Op Chicks, a small-town vintage store, animation from a nearby university art department, and Liz Lemon Swindle, an oil-on-canvas artist.

In the coming months you will meet more creative people: a water-color artist, a filmmaker, and a motivational speaker. Today, I will introduce you to someone who has brought science to life.

We often hear about the sorry state of our public school system. However, I grew up in that school system and feel a sense of gratitude to creative teachers who went the extra mile to make learning fun.

The more senses involved in the learning process, the more memorable it became. For example, I didn't appreciate history until I visited Washington D.C. where I saw, felt, and smelled the actual locations history had happened.

I know that not every teacher can take students on such a field trip, but some of them can make people sing. Here now is Ode to the Brain...

Author Spotlight: Jerry Spinelli

It's a new month already, and I am highlighting author Jerry Spinelli. I've only read Eggs and Stargirl, but I think he's most well known for his Newbery book Maniac Magee. Growing up, I knew a girl named Jerry, so I assumed Spinelli was a woman only to discover otherwise. I was thoroughly impressed at how well he wrote from a young female perspective. Some of his stories are a couple of decades old. Maybe it's time to pull them out again, and introduce them to your family. Which Spinelli novel is your favorite? Do you know any authors who write with a similar style?

How to Judge an Author IV

I asked my kids what kinds of books the following authors write, and here are their entertaining answers...What does she write? *very sure* Fantasy, for YA. She looks pretty, and pretty/young go with romance authors, but her hair doesn't say romance, and she doesn't look weird enough to be a science fiction author, or mean enough to write horror. Here, I am thinking twice because my daughter knows enjoyed writing a short horror story recently. Hm. Anyway, this is Kate Messner, the author of middle grade novels The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z and Sugar and Ice.

*I show her the picture* Ooooooooo, um...romance. YA. Why's that? Because she looks like a magazine cover and people who write romance sometimes do. This is Cynthea Liu, author of the middle grade novel Paris Pan Takes the Dare, which I haven't read yet, but it's on my TBR. I wonder if this MG has romance. Cynthea also helps aspiring authors through her book Writing for Children and Teens.

How about this one. What does she write? Hm. I don't know. Let's go with autobiography. Why? I bet she...would write a book about herself, *laughs* because she took time to go to a portrait studio to take a picture of just her with that blue lighting, black shirt, and her hair set just so. Good one. This is Katherine Hannigan, author of Ida B, one of my all time, favorite middle grade stories. I guess it could be a secret autobiography, you know? Did Katherine put a lot of herself into Ida B? I wonder.

And last, but most surely not least...How about this guy? *laughs* Horror, for adults, *waits, scrunches face* but the way his eyebrows go up, I'm unsure 'cuz that's what a nice guy would do - not horror. He could be a mystery writer. Think of the Clue game. I can imagine one like him smoking a cigar. Does one of the Clue characters actually smoke? I'd have to get it out to see. We all know this guy! CS Lewis, famous for many books, but most of all The Chronicles of Narnia.

Let It Snow!

This is what growing up in Utah looks like from December through February...

With dreams of ultimately reaching this level...

I didn't wear a helmet though (we lived dangerously back then) and I didn't reach the have-to-ride-a-helicopter-to-get-there level either, but I graduated from the bunny hill to the green circle, on through the blue square, and eventually to the black diamond.

*I know, cool*

My dad must have had tremendous patience to wait the half-an-hour it took me to get down the toughest mountains, not to mention the times he had to hike back up the mountain on his skis in order to help me when I got stuck. Thanks for that.

Things I remember most:
The silence of a new snowfall.
The pleasant tingling of the powder on my face as I flew down the mountain.
The boom of the cannon as it set off avalanches.
The chuh-clunk of ski boots on the hard lodge floor.

So, as winter approaches, and you consider where to go for a lovely weekend away, consider Utah, where you can find the greatest snow on earth, not to mention carriage rides around the beautiful Christmas lights of Temple Square!

Overheard

I know it's rude to eavesdrop, but...I bet you do it too. I know that doesn't make it less rude, though. Why is it rude in the first place? Hypothesis: We might hear something that's none of our business. True, and terribly rude if we're listening in on a conversation held behind a closed door, for example *I don't do this...anymore*. What if we're in a public place? I think it's weird when others talk of private affairs in the grocery store, or a restaurant, or on a cell phone in an elevator. So if one does this, one should be aware that writers take notes and use them in stories.

Here are some of my recent finds.

80 year old woman: *getting a kiss from an unshaven man* Oh! Whiskers. I've got whiskers too! See? Feel.

MIL: *talking to the kids* Good night. Sleep tight. Don't let the boogers bite.

Jewelry store associate: *to fellow associate* You know how people come in here and you don't know what to say so you just make up stuff?

Middle aged woman: They think I'm too young to have a daughter in college!
Older woman: If you keep eating like that, you won't look young for long.

Now that's a keeper. Did it make your jaw drop? Do you use overheard conversations in your stories?

Arizona Balloon Classic

As a girl, my dad used to take me to the point of the mountain to watch the hang gliders. He was a glider pilot, and offered to give me a ride...but I declined, and I admit I would still decline - though I admire the way they swoop and whirl around. I would, however, consider riding in a hot air balloon. I even took my daughters on a staycation to Heber Valley where we went horse back riding, swam in a crator, and signed up to float in a hot air balloon...but the early morning flight was cancelled due to weather. *sigh* So when I heard of the Arizona Balloon Classic I started dreaming again.

Hot air balloons are magical creations from the land of OZ, so seeing one immediately instills a sense of wonder in my mind, and I stare open mouthed, captivated - especially when they appear seemingly out of nowhere, like the morning I was camping in Virginia and one lifted through the the haze over a cornfield. Shockingly beautiful!

Smelling Roses

Think of the last time something stopped you in your tracks. We live our busy lives, going from one place to another, checking items off of our list, focusing on what's ahead rather than on what's now. But sometimes something catches us like a fish on a line...first a snag, and then a tug, and then we're hooked - whether by something beautiful, happy, or sad. We stop to smell the roses, as we say in my family.

One time I went to an art museum, and the current display was a collection of sketches. In the corner of the room was this video, and it stopped me in my tracks.

It even made me cry. In a good way. Beautiful and sad at once.

Book Academy

I attended the UVU Book Academy last week, and am pleased to say: You don't have to pay hundreds of dollars to learn something worthwhile at a writers conference. *pulling you aside, and whispering in your ear*...until your ready to pitch to the big agents and mingle with the well known editors. I've only seen them at the costlier conferences, so start saving!

Dan Wells was an awesome keynote speaker, and answered the oft asked question, "Where do you get your ideas?" while poking fun at the asker... "Where do you not get ideas?" Learning how to be observant is key, and always remember to ask yourself questions about your observations. He encouraged us to use our ideas without waiting for the best idea to come along. "Ideas are cheap. You will always have more."

I learned more about plot patterns (thank you Judy Olsen), and how to avoid the common pitfalls in writing romance from Michele Holmes. Admit it - every story has some romance, so even though you might not write it all of the time, you do write romance some of the time.

I even won a book and met a couple of my Twitter friends for the first time. Thank heaven they recognized me or I would have been oblivious to their presence.

Imagine you wake up and realize you cannot move any part of your body except your eyes, nor can you speak. When I was a teen, I visited a facility for severely disabled people. To be honest, I was frightened and didn't know how to interact with the individuals there. I could only focus on what they didn't have, and I left with a feeling of great sadness.

Last night, I watched a program about Professor James Gips. He and his colleagues at Boston College invented EagleEyes, on a whim, for fun, at first. It didn't take long for them to realize it could work on the disabled who are unable to communicate in other way than through eye movement. EagleEyes is a computer that is controlled by eye movement alone. For those who live with tremendous handicaps, EagleEyes opens a door to the world of communication, play, and learning. Check it out, here. I am proud to say that BYU (my favorite) is the second university to receive this technology. Thank heaven for people who look past what others can't do, and envision what they can do. They are an example to us all.

Author Spotlight: Sharon Creech

This month I'm highlighting author Sharon Creech, who has written many books, including Chasing Redbird, Walk Two Moons, and Ruby Holler. I enjoyed these so much that I tried Love That Dog, only to discover it is a story told in poetry form. I don't enjoy poetry very often, and almost returned it to the library before I even started - but I thought I'd give it a chance, and then I enjoyed it enough to get part two, Hate That Cat. Fancy that, me reading an entire book of poetry. I'm proud of myself, even if it is geared toward middle grade kids. Actually, I think I'm a kid at heart, how about you?

Bermuda Beauties

Genre Schmenre

When I say genre schmenre I don't mean to imply that genre is not important, rather that genre is not a common word for the majority of the population. For most, there is no difference between action, adventure, and thriller. Sci fi is only about aliens, and fantasy is only about fairies and trolls. Dystopian? What's that? In addition, a book is non fiction or fiction. It's for kids, teens or grown ups, not PB, MG, YA or adult. Adult? Does that mean it's rated R or something? I thought that was called a romance. See what I mean? I asked my daughter to define a few genres and this is what she said...

Action Constant intense moments. Really epic. Full of adventure.

Adventure One main exciting thing.

Thriller People who read thriller books sort of like feeling the jerk in their stomach. *gasp* Oh no, what's gonna' happen?

Fantasy Unrealistic, but feels realistic.

Sci Fi Aliens, futuristic, not fairies.

Speculative I might be wrong, but I have a guess. Is it choose your own adventure?

That last one is a pretty thoughtful guess, and I sort of wonder if the choose your own adventure books are in the speculative catagory.

Perhaps aspiring authors who say, "I've written a romantic speculative thriller" are still in the process of learning what genre is all about. What do you think? Have you struggled with catagorizing books?

How to Judge an Author Part III

I asked my kids what kind of books the following authors write, and since you love this topic, I've decided to make it a regular post! This time though, these authors are actual friends I've met in the bloggerhood. What kind of books does she write? She looks kind of intimidating. I’m not sure. Historical fiction? It’s hard to tell on her because she looks young so she doesn’t seem like the kind of person who wouldn't write historical fiction but she's got a look that makes her seem like she’s not a romance writer – otherwise I would think she’s a romance writer. I wonder what 'the look' is. This is Rachael Renee Anderson whose most recent book is Minor Adjustments.

What kinds of stories does she write? Kid lit because of her funny smile *laughs* and her cutsie hat. What’s funny about her smile? The way she’s looking up as if she were a kid. My other daughter said I bet she writes historical fiction. Why? Well, she just seems like the sort of person that would write historical stuff, like she could be a history teacher or something. And that smile seems sort of like she knows something about fairies – so fantasy. I'm thinking they see Angie Lofthouse as a very versatile author. She's writen a lot of short science fiction that you can find here.

How about this author? *no hesitation* Romance. For one thing, she’s wearing red velvet, which just seems sort of romancy. Romantic people wear velvet? *nods* Um, and the way she has her hair died and she’s pretty so, yeah. Many of you know the friendly and cheerful Talli Roland who has written The Hating Game and Watching Willow Watts which are, indeed, chick lit, which always contains romance.

Last one. What does she write? Comedy? Because it’s a funny picture. Writers wouldn’t probably generally put a picture of themselves peeking over a scarf or something like that – unless they wanted to hide their identity. HAHA! And my other daughter said Comedy, because she is squinting her eyes a little bit like she’s smiling and she looks like the kind of girl that would have a sense of humor. By the way, I asked them seperately, but they both came up with comedy. Terry Lynn Johnson is the author of the adventure Dogsled Dreams. Terry, are you a funny lady? You'll have to let us know!

Festival of Books

Forty years is a long time for a book lover to finally learn about book festivals. My definition of a book fest is like a library + a party = best day ever. South Dakota is a sixteen hour drive, so I don't think I'll be able to make it, but the event earns a celebratory spot on my blog for making the effort to promote literacy in such an outgoing way. For a chance to attend the party, visit their site for details. Sadly, I learned I just missed my own states fest, but thankfully these things are annual. A Glimpse of Utah

I especially enjoy reading other blogs when the authors post pictures of their home - not their literal home, but rather their surroundings, sights from a day trip or a walk in the park. Not only does this provide an opportunity for me to recognize the beauties of other places, but also the similarities when compared to my own home. So today, enjoy a glimpse of my home - not the famous red rock canyons of the southern end of the state, but the small beauties of Utah's high desert - the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains. It's a wonder flowers can grow in such dry, harsh conditions. You might like to know that the 4th picture down is actually poison ivy. Oh, and my header is the view out of my own back yard on a misty winter morning. You can't see the mountains that day.

Author Spotlight: Jenny Nimmo

I discovered this author about the same time Pixar's Finding Nemo came out, so I actually remembered her name by association, which is saying something since I'm not one to remember names very well. Even when I read a novel I cannot remember the names of the characters. They're always, "the one guy who..." or "the main character..." or "the creepy one that...". Jenny Nimmo is the author of the Charlie Bone series, The Children of the Red King. I almost always visit an author's official website, and hers is one of my favorites - simple, yet fun. How to Judge an Author Part 2

We had so much fun with this last month, I thought I'd do another. I showed my kids the following author and asked them, What kind of books does she write? Historical fiction. What makes you think she writes that? First I thought she looked like she writes psychotic things (the way she's tilting her head and smiling, and the way her neck has little lines) but that would be mean, so historical fictions came out of my mouth. Wow. I have those little lines, too. I should make sure I don't tilt my head when I smile. This is YA romance author Meg Cabot, famous in our family for The Princess Diaries.

What kind of books does he write? Horror. And why do you think he writes horror? Because of his sad eyes and funny hair and eyebrows, and he's a man. I've written a little horror. Does that mean I have sad eyes and funny eyebrows? This is actually well known, prolific suspense author, James Patterson. His upcoming book is Kill Me If You Can, to be released August 29th. I haven't read any of his work. Have you? How do you like it? Sometimes when I read prolific authors, all their books start looking the same - though I still enjoy them.

What kind of books does he write? He doesn't look scary enough to write horror, and romance novels just sounds funny for him. What does he write? He's the author of The Lightning Thief. He is?! Yes. This is Rick Riordan whose most recent work The Throne of Fire came out last May. Have you read his Percy Jackson and the Olympians series? My daughter loved it, but admitted she was disappointed with the movie for not following the book well enough.

What kind of books does she write? She looks nice. Umm...Science fiction because the look about her face - she could write about aliens. She looks slightly like one in disguise. *laughs* These are the thoughts I usually keep to myself. I promise. I'm not making these up. This is YA contemporary fiction author Sara Zarr who wrote Once Was Lost, which I just read and loved, and personally I don't think she looks like an alien in disguise.

Non-Pet-People

Were you like so many other children who begged their parents for a pet, or in the minority who didn't want to touch the beasts with a ten foot pole? Myself: I pleaded to keep every stray that crossed our yard and finally succeeded in getting a puppy for my tenth birthday. I was going to name him Wildfire because I loved that 70's song, but the neighbors laughed and I relented, opting for Tiger instead.

Through the years I've had dogs, cats, fish, horses, rabbits, rodents, reptiles, and birds. Each one had its lovely qualities of beauty, body language, sounds, and friendly interactions with one another and my family. However, I've noticed two things. One, they're all smelly , and two, they're occasionally unpredictable.

If you are a non-pet-person, is the smell and unpredictability what keeps you away? The responsibility or noise? A traumatic childhood event? I'd like to know.

The Co-Op Chicks

In keeping with the belief that everyone is creative, let me introduce you to the Co-Op Chicks.

They've cheered up the creepy alley with feel good decor and flowers, turning an eye sore into a pleasure to behold.

With a tendency to steer clear of mass produced, cheap products, these chicks cheep to a different tune. Two years ago, they decided to open this store featuring antiques, vintage, recycled, and hand made items.

Located in the cherished, historic First National Bank of Layton, Utah they focus on a down to earth, old-time, friendly, local feel. When I asked them where they get their items, they said from regular people, all over the US who receive a percentage of the sales (thus the co-op).

The buttons above are made by a lady in Kansas, and say things like silly goose, and top notch.

One of my favorite items is the chap stick called Chicken Poop. It even says, "contains no poop". The story? The maker's grandparent used to tell his kids to put some chicken poop on their chapped lips, so they wouldn't lick them.

Another item I loved is the following book purse. Have you ever seen anything like it? They even have a free book exchange table, right at the front of the store - bring one, take one. How could I not like this place? Way to go ladies! Find out more about them HERE.

Books in Wonderland

I have excellent news. Doodle the Beast, my foster kitten, has found a home. It took a lot of effort - posting in the classifieds and vet offices for several weeks. I even posted at a local garage sale, and that did the trick. The little girl had been looking for a kitten, and her mother had already said yes. She's thankful she found The Beast. I have some thanks to give too, because he has inspired a picture book in me. Thanks Dood.

Moab Music Festival

Cycstel: Chori's future wife. It's an arranged marriage and Chori's mother wanted a daughter-in-law with a strange name too.

It so happens Chori and Cycstel fall madly in love and have two lovely children: Catren, with a fetish for cats, and Natedust, with a fetish for shiny things (they take after their grandmother).

They live happily ever after in The City of Sparc.

New to You

We are occasionally stuck in the rut of our own comfort zone, unwilling to try something new. Whether it's a new food like the local Indian restaurant, or a new groove like a country line dance, taking that risk - big or small - is intimidating.

But branching out can be healthy and invigorating. Can you remember the last time something went better than you expected? What a pleasant surprise, what a relief!

The last new thing I tried was reading a book of poetry. Author Sharon Creech didn't warn me though. The title Love That Dog *a novel* was a little deceptive. I hesitantly gave it a chance for ten pages, then twenty, then all eighty-six. Hm, maybe I do like poetry...sometimes.

This is one of the most incredibly down to earth, encouraging YA authors I've met. She taught a class at WIFYR 2010, after which I bought her books. You should know, I've been to several conferences like this and don't usually buy the books for one reason or another. I'm a little hard to convince, I guess. I wondered if I'd be disappointed in them, because if I ever saw her again, would she ask? What would I say?

But I had no reason for worry. I loved the script-like style, and she handled some sensitive subjects with great tact, even humor. Her two books are This is What I Did and Everything Is Fine. If you're in the mood to try something unique, or if you've never enjoyed YA previously, you might give Ann Dee a second look.

I showed my kids a picture of the following author and asked them, What kind of books does he write? Fantasy. What makes you think he writes fantasy? He has a swoosh hair-do. He's looking off into the distance. He's young - young people have new ideas. This is actually Isaac Marion, science-fiction author whose current work is Warm Bodies. Is it that big of a leap from fantasy to sci-fi? They were close! Here are a few more...

She writes romance *with a breathy voice*. What makes you think she writes romance? The way she's posing - she's pretty, wearing lip stick, her hair is nice, and she's a girl. I'd like to know what this means for girl authors who don't write romance? This is actually Kathryn Stockett, historical fiction author of The Help.

He writes science-fiction. What makes you think he writes sci-fi? The look he's giving the camera, the little smile on his face - he looks like he's trying to make you think he knows something. Plus, the way he's standing. This is Kevin O'Brien, author of several thrillers, including Disturbed.

I saved the best for last. I didn't even have to ask them the question. They didn't pause to think. They knew, immediately...

Horror. What makes you think he writes horror? He has crazy eyes. His smile is showing only the bottom half of his front teeth, and he looks like a turtle. Bingo. You heard it straight from the kid's mouths - this is Stephen King, famous horror author whose most recent work is Full Dark No Stars.

Beautiful Things III

I haven't done one of these for many months, so here we go: Yellow eyes on a black cat, hummingbirds, flowers on a cactus, sketch pencils, a stack of books from the library, ripe raspberries hanging on the bush, sprinklers on a hot day, nectarines on my tree, hot dogs roasting over a fire, canyons, waterfalls, fireworks, baby birds, a dogs waggling tail, the smell of fresh herbs, fields of corn, Doodle The Beast sleeping, home-made ice cream, a hand written letter, birthday cakes, no dishes in the sink, and my soft bed after a camping trip.

Can You Say Capoeira?

Volta Miuda Capoeira, led by Mestrando Jamaika, is a Brazilian martial art group in Salt Lake City, Utah. Oddly, I met them in my library parking lot. Muscular individuals with strange musical instruments? I thought. I must say hello!

My own definition of Capoeira (cap-oh-wee-dah) - a type of dance with intense martial art flare and beauty. Since 2001, and with over 150 students, Mestrando Jamaika offers classes for many ages and levels of experience. Also, students are tested and presented with a cord - like a Karate belt - at a yearly Batizado. If you're local, you can see a performance at the Sandy library, August 13, 1:30 pm, or at the Hunter Library, August 16, 7:00 pm.

I'm continually amazed at the creativity I see in all walks of life. This is an impressive sport. Have you ever heard of it?

Read and Win

It's that time of year again - county fair time. I can almost smell the funnel cake. Why we enjoy walking around in the blazing sun, gazing in barns full of 4H pigs, goats, cows, chickens, bunnies, and such is beyond me - but I do have fond memories of this yearly family activity. I used to picture myself winning a blue ribbon in the art show, which I never entered. It was fun to dream, though.

My local county fair happens next month, and as I browsed their page I noticed a link titled Read and Win. Aimed at younger readers, the offer promises a free carnival ride for reading ten books. The only requirement is a parent or librarian's signature on the official printed certificate. There is no stated age limit, so I may see if they'll give me a free ride too!

Quick, Hide That Book

Have you ever been caught reading an embarrassing book? I'm not talking about heaving bosom romances. Rather I mean the self-help sub genre of non-fiction; they cover topics like overcoming depression, interpreting dreams, home remedies, menopause, or meditation.

I've read a few: The Color Code by Taylor Hartman (I'm a pretty equal mix of blue and red - weird, huh?), and Hold Me Tight by Dr. Sue Johnson are a couple that come to my mind. They were good.

For the most part though, I'm a bit suspicious of the self help genre - especially the ones accompanied by a lot of hype. Yeah, right! I think. Who are they to be making such claims? I wonder. But the draw is still there - even if I disagree with the author's point of view. I'm curious, like a cat *wondering if that's a bad sign* so I sneak a little paragraph here and there.

Are you sceptical of self help books? Have you read any good ones?

On another note, I've only been able to make comments on blogs with the pop up window (not embedded in the post). One of my blogging buddies *thanks* said this has to do with changes Blogger is making in their templates. I know I'm not the only one having trouble. So if you notice your comment numbers dropping, perhaps there is a correlation.

But, I Disagree

We are prone to people pleasing. For the most part it's in our nature to get along, remaining silent when we disagree with someone - especially if they're more educated or experienced. We take what they say as gospel.

Attending writers conferences has exposed me to so much new information, and sometimes I question what I hear. I disagree, at least momentarily.

Write what you know

I wondered if this meant I had to limit myself to places, hobbies, lifestyles, professions etc. with which I was familiar. It put a cramp in my imaginative style. Then I wrote a short story that did not fit this definition, yet it was my best write what you know example. When I dig into my well of experience, emotion, fear, failure, and success, and apply that to my writing, it takes on a whole new dimension. Now I agree: Write what you know.

Stick with one genre

Who is Stephen King? Author of horror for adults. Who is Dr. Seuss? Author of picture books for children. Does this mean I need to write only YA, only poetry, only sci fi? Is it amateurish to dabble in short story, picture books, and graphic novels? I wanted another opinion, so I asked at the last writers conference I attended. They looked at me like they didn't understand a word. I had to explain myself. They all agreed I had received a bad piece of advice. King and Seuss found their niche, and rightfully stayed put, but that doesn't mean I have to.

Conclusion: stick with your gut, find out for yourself, ask, and study. You'll feel more confident when you have to make your next move.

Author Spotlight: Robert Liparulo

I've been reading Robert Liparulo's YA series The Dreamhouse Kings, starting with House of Dark Shadows. Comes a Horseman, a novel for adults, has been out since 2005, and since then the guy has been spitting out novels faster than a mouse on your linoleum floor - ten, according to Wiki, with two more in the works.

Get this, three of his novels for adults are going to be movies, plus the Dreamhouse Kings is going to be made into movies too. All I'm wondering is, where have I been? I've never heard of Liparulo until a couple of months ago, and neither have any of my reading friends. Have you read any of his work? If you like YA + scary + adventure = give this author a try and let me know what you think.

Which Mascot?

I still like the idea of a blog mascot. Remember last month when I asked for suggestions and said we'd take a vote? The time has arrived.

Previously, the poll had been favorite literary pets, and Hedwig won - he was my vote too, but poor Cujo didn't get any at all. Strangely, I don't feel sorry for him. Not an ounce.

Changing subjects, I just returned from the Jackson Hole Writers Conference. I wanted to compare my local conferences with an out of state conference - plus, it was an opportunity to meet new authors, editors, and agents, experience a different culture (Wyoming has its own culture, did you know?), and continue my efforts to improve my writing. I was very impressed with the presentations, and amused with the poets. Editor, Chuck Sambuchino and author, Natalie Standiford were most helpful for me personally. If you're anywhere near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I believe you'd benefit from this conference when it comes back around next year.

Doodle the Beast

Motto for the day: I keep running into road blocks. I must be doing something right.

Now, on with my task...a light hearted post that has nothing to do with literature, and everything to do with *feel good*.

We're fostering a kitten. His mother abandoned him in the barn when he was only four weeks old. We bottle fed him until he was seven weeks old - the way he reached for the miniature bottle with his claws all extended and his tiny body desperate for nourishment was endearing.

The vet said, "I'll be surprised if he makes it through the next few weeks." Doodle only weighed in at twelve ounces. The good news is that his most recent vet check was all thumbs up, and now he weighs two and a half pounds.

He's got beautiful green eyes, tabby stripes and spots under semi-long black fur, and an extremely playful, strong personality; thus, he has become Doodle the Beast.

If you feel so inclined as to adopt him, please let me know. If you already have a pet, please tell us about it.

Me? Creative?

Oh, I could never do that. Have you ever said this, or has anyone ever said it to you? The phrase comes in many forms: I've never been any good at that, or It doesn't come easily for me, or I've tried but I wasn't very successful.

When people discover that I enjoy writing, many of them say, I'm not creative enough to do that. Maybe it's true; they don't write. But frankly, I believe everyone is creative in different ways, and we all benefit from that creativity.

Merriam-Webster tells us creative means the ability or power to create; the quality of something created, rather than imitated; managed so as to get around limits.

Yes, the word applies to artists, musicians, authors, and actors...but wouldn't it also apply to scientists, electricians, athletes, parents, landscape technicians, cooks, nurses, inventors, and students?

Even the brain of an infant is built to think of ways to accomplish unspoken goals, and find paths around constant obstacles!

When you come to your mountain, and find it difficult to proceed, pull some creativity out. Believe. Try. Again and again, until you get *whatever it is* better than before. You're only trying to beat you.

Library Love

According to legend, my eyes popped out of my head when I first walked into a library. I've grown accustomed to the sight now, but if I were to personally visit someplace like this...

...I might have the same problem again.

My local library offers several activities for book lovers of all ages: The Summer Reading Program, Preschool Storytime, and Book Club, for instance. I'm sure your library does the same.

However, I'm interested in learning about other literary activities such as BEA, charitable book drives, library book sales, indie bookstore events, or writing contests, to name a few.

What does your local library do to promote reading? Have you thought of a literary activity you wish they would sponsor?

Does Nonfiction Sell Better?

Have you heard that nonfiction sells better than fiction? I have, and at first I thought no way. Wouldn't it depend on the publishing company?

Anyway, it got me thinking about the nonfiction that's made an impression on me, like this Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary. When I was learning to read, I remember pouring over the pages of illustrations in books just like it. It was probably the first and last time I ever saw a tomato frog. Imagine. Seriously though, I don't think I realized how many nonfiction books I've read.

Once Despised

Most of us despise word verification, myself included, though I've been guilty of using it until recently. In my efforts to connect with more writers and readers, I've been frustrated at the amount of time it adds to commenting - sometimes doubling it, and thus making my efforts much less productive.

So I took the advice of a friend, though she wasn't talking about something as important as this. *grin* She said, "It's all in how you look at it." Then I realized I could change my view of word verification by seeing it as a source for character names in a future wip.

Yeah, right, you say? Here are some examples...

Mictuper: Ronald's new name after he lost his job with McDonald's and began selling Tupperware.

Replekyl: An aspiring writer gone mad/turned murderer when he discovers a fellow critique partner has replicated his story and used it to become a New York Time's Bestselling Author.

Mallaspo: The next Voldemort.

Bellisto: A handsome, Italian immigrant, trying to escape a haunting mafia past.

Now, will you look forward to the next word verification to see if you can come up with something as cheeky?

Who Are You?

Aspiring authors have been told to come up with a definition of who they are, and decide on exactly how that definition influences their writing - because it does.

Whether we are religious or not, simply being human means we place value on certain actions, attitudes, and mottos. For example, I have a great admiration for an author who writes what they know: a doctor who writes a medical mystery, a police officer who writes a crime novel, or a survivor who writes of overcoming tragedy, and loving life.

For clarification, I wouldn't expect this month's spotlight author, Patrick Carman, to have lived in a small town with a haunted mechanical dredge (Skeleton Creek) in order to write a novel based upon the mystery surrounding it. The best thing about authors is their ability to create what did not exist.

But our lives, our experiences, our beliefs, our selves, show in our work. This is why I am scared of Stephen King. *wink*

Author Spotlight: Patrick Carman

I'm celebrating the work of Patrick Carman this month, and in the process of typing this post I'm looking after an abandoned 5 week old kitten.

I first discovered Patrick's work in 2003 with his debut novel The Dark Hills Divide, a series called The Land of Elyon. We're a read-it-aloud family, and enjoyed the memorable characters and adventures.

A few years later, I was delighted with his series, Skeleton Creek, a book-online video combination. It was the first of its kind, and has just the right amount of scare for my taste.

Short Story Contests

After many helpful suggestions in the comments of last week's post on where to submit a short story, I met a fellow aspiring author on Twitter who informed me that she is having a short story contest on her blog. Today, Tuesday, is the deadline. Hustle on over there if you'd like a chance to enter.

Then I remembered Cheerios, along with Simon & Schuster, sponsor a short children's story contest every year. It's for aspiring authors who have never been published, and the deadline isn't until July 15th.

Short Story Quandary

First of all, hello to my new followers! I really enjoy getting to know other readers and writers, so I'm pleased you came by.

Secondly, I'm begging for suggestions. I want a blog mascot and would love your input. Click here to see the mascot post, unless you like the scroll button - because that works too. We'll use the suggestions and take a vote.

Now, do any of you write short stories? When I searched for a 'short story' image on Microsoft's free clip art page, I found this picture of a short man wearing shorts. It works.

I've written some that I'd like to publish, but as an aspiring author I don't know who to approach. Some of my friends suggested Duotrope, and I've looked into it. However, I feel clumsy when I try to use their search tool. The results say your search is too broad or narrow, or when I get results, can I even trust them?

I was taught that a well known short story, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson was first published in The New Yorker. Wow. How would that be? 'Twould be nice, that's how.

Tell me your thoughts or suggestions on the subject. Where would you publish a short story?

By the way, I have a slight aversion to e-publishing on my own, since anyone can do it. So I'm looking for another venue...

Blog Mascot

Do you remember your high school mascot? In Utah, we've got a lot of cougars, bobcats, mustangs, wolves, and warriors. If you think about it, we see mascots every day. I don't even watch sports very often, yet I know about the Utah Jazz's Bear. Twitter has their bird, McDonald's has Ronald, Disney has Mickey, and Kellogg's has Tony.

I WANT A MASCOT!

I don't know if it will work, but I like the idea enough to test the waters. Yea, or nay? My teenage niece made a blog chronicling her move from Nevada to Georgia, and she used a mascot - a toy dinosaur. She named him, and took a picture of him at every stop along the way. It was comical, and unique. If this blog had a mascot, what would it be? Would you guys be willing to make suggestions? If I get enough ideas, I'll put a poll in the sidebar and we'll vote!

Pacing and Ice Cream

Pacing - a term with which I was entirely unfamiliar when I wrote my first novel - reminds me of ice cream. Why? About three miles from my home is a place called Pace's where I can order fish and chips, burgers and fries with extra fry sauce, or malts and soft serve ice cream cones. If they were a novel, their pacing would be slow because they don't make an order until someone asks for it.

Josi Kilpack taught a class on pacing at a writers conference a couple of weeks ago and shared a few key pointers to help us get a better grasp of the idea.

o Watch for it in other books. Is it too fast/slow?
o Younger readers need a faster pace to keep their attention.
o A character driven pace (what happens internally) tends to be slower.
o A plot driven pace (what happens to the main character) tends to be faster.
o Use pacing to help readers remember important clues.
o Editing for pacing is not a 1st draft task.

How do we pick up the pace? Action, remove descriptions, crisp verbs, shorter sentences/chapters, dialog, or flash forward.

How do we slow it down? Character reflection, back story, complex sentences, soft verbs, flashback, character development, questions, or layered details.

When it's time to edit your manuscript for pacing, Josi suggests color coding to help us get a visual idea of our results.

There IS a Writers Conference for You

Had I known about writers conferences, and how valuable they were before I wrote my first novel, I would have attended one.

Excuse #1: I'm not ready to go. I don't have anything for them to critique.
The Low Down: Some conferences cater to advanced writers, but there are many that do not. You don't have to attend the workshop/bootcamp portion. You can simply attend to listen to the speakers.

Excuse #2: It's too expensive.
The Low Down: Prices vary from free, to cheap, to mid-range, to expensive. True, there is a difference in quality, but no matter the price, they all offer important information about the basics.

Excuse #3: I hate to travel.
The Low Down: Ask your local university. Some of them hold conferences. You shouldn't have to go far. Sometimes you don't even have to leave your house, as is the case with the online type.

Excuse #4: That one is not aimed at my genre.
The Low Down: It's true that one conference may be for romance writers, another for fantasy writers, and still another for kid lit. However, the speakers talk about so much more. A writer of any genre may benefit! Besides that, you may be inspired to try something new.

There are other reasons - I don't have time, I can't find a babysitter, etc. - but if you plan far enough ahead, you may be able to pull it off.

For me, the major benefits of writers conferences have been learning the industry jargon, observing how the industry works, who does what, and proper etiquette. What's more, you may meet a mentor, or a writers group, or familiarize yourself with several agents and editors. Oh, and the inspiration and motivation is luxurious.

The following list is suggested by fellow aspiring authors from all over the US - Some have already happened, but they're a yearly event. If you go, be prepared. Find out who the speakers are and what they've accomplished. You could have a chance to speak with them and compliment their work.

Sara Megibow works at the Nelson Literary Agency. She attended LDStorymakers and taught a class on acquiring a literary agent. She was loaded with info and advice. Would you like to see some rough numbers from her most recent year with Nelson Literary? Prepare yourself!

Woo! Those are some incredible odds to beat. Sara said the majority of those who query are simply not ready. It's easy to eliminate thousands when the amateurs stick out. The biggest mistakes she sees are data dump, and telling vs. showing. The ones who are nearly 100% ready are those who study their craft and attend conferences where they can learn about such topics.

Preaching to the Blogger Choir

I'm a big fan of writers conferences since my first in February 2010. If you're an aspiring author, they are essential to learning the industry and improving your craft - even though all the info can probably be found online. Actual conferences provide more impressive, lasting personal connections with others in the field than internet alone.

I attended a class at LDStorymakers called Building Your Blog Into A Platform You Can Stand On taught by Elana Johnson. She's loaded with info and very willing to share her experience with aspiring authors. If you visit her most recent post, she provides a link to an upcoming podcast on platform so you can get the full spiel too. As a side note, in Elana's sidebar, she also made her book From The Query To The Call available to download for FREE.

The biggest thing I learned in her class was the fact that I need a platform. Thus far, I have only blogged to connect with other readers and writers *and you guys are awesome*. It's a way for me to learn about not only the industry, but other writers conferences, and resources for improving my craft. Many of you already know this, so it's like preaching to the choir! But this is just one step in the right direction. I have realized the possibilities are greater with a focused plan.

Have you ever had molten lava cake? It's like being given permission to eat the batter, but better. Mm Mm. I had one at the Rain Forest Cafe a few years ago, and have never forgotten how delicious it was. They even topped it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, extra chocolate sauce, and a sparkler. Just one fed us all! I think it's my second favorite dessert, aside from cheesecake.

My step father was a pilot, so we flew many places, including Hawaii. When my mother ordered a tropical drink, it had a cute paper umbrella. I kept it and used it for my Barbies. If real umbrellas were less expensive, and took up less space, I'd probably collect them - such wonderful variety. Plus, I don't need an umbrella very often in Utah. It's a desert, you know? We only get about 10-15 inches of precipitation a year, which isn't as dry as Arizona, Nevada, or New Mexico, but still a desert. How much rain do you get?

A tropical theme would not be complete without a sea shell. My mother drove me to California every summer when I was a girl. She owned a light blue VW beetle, and we competed for space with semi tractor trailers for twelve hours on the desert roads in order to reach the beach. I spent days playing in the sand and collecting sea shells. I wish I could share one of my shells with you, but I don't have them any more. What did you collect when you were young?

When was the last time you received a hand written letter in the mail? I bet it was a Christmas card, and perhaps it wasn't hand written, but rather one of those photo cards. To clarify, I like Christmas cards, and I especially like photos of friends and family. BUT, a hand written letter means a lot these days and seems as ancient as the message-in-a-bottle method. L is for Lip Smacking

Yes, we just did "K is for kiss" on yesterday's post. But I thought I'd put in a double dose of affection in this gift box - a different kind than yesterday's. One that's harder to guess.

I am not one of those kissy-face, touchy-feely sort of people, although I appreciate those who are. We need all the genuine love and affection we can get in this rough world. But I guess I feel the need to explain myself since it's highly unusual for me to focus so much on kisses. My explanation? I'm having a good day, and I'm having too much fun with the A-Z hop. Really.

K is for Kisses

I cannot put my kisses into this prize pack, and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want them anyway, since we hardly know each another. *wink*

However, there is one type of kiss that I can put in our mystery package (I'm sure you can guess) and you can share them with someone you love.

Would you believe I have never read Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell? My daughter suggested it, and she hasn't even read it! I'm positive most of you have, so perhaps you can share your opinion of it in the comments, and then share the actual book (if you win) with a YA near and dear to your heart.

G is for Glass

A refreshing glass of lemonade or some sort of fruit smoothie would go nicely with our mystery prize. My personal favorite is an ordinary fruit smoothie - not the icy kind, but the silky, creamy kind with a touch of sugar. Mm Mm.

Several of you have been checking in regularly, trying to guess the prize. I'll give you a hint (if you haven't already figured it out). Each piece of the puzzle refers to an actual item in the prize pack - all centered around a tropical theme. Most of the items are plainly stated, like B for bookmark, and C for cookbook. Others are not, like A for anana (pineapple). I'm not going to send an actual pineapple through the mail, but rather something that has to do with a pineapple, see?

I hope the winner will enjoy this as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. Even if the lucky person doesn't want every item, he or she can share with loved ones! Spread the word, unless you want to keep your chances higher. ;)

F is for Flip-Flops

Oh, and I will take a moment to assure you that these items are new (the cookbook is from Amazon in 'like new' condition) so no worries about having to put up with someone elses unwanted pineapple, worn out bookmark, half used eraser, or germy flip-flops, etc. What kind of bloggy friend would I be if I dared do otherwise? ;)

E is for Erase

I'll never forget the time I saw my first novelty eraser. I was about twelve. Why an eraser would be etched into my memory, I don't know, but it sure smelled good, and it came from a place called Neiman Marcus.

I didn't know there was a difference between my local mall and places like Neiman Marcus until I was much older. However, the gift giver raised her eyebrows when she told me where it came from - and eyebrow raises are a sure indication that a gift is unique (or shocking, one of the two).

The eraser in your gift package - if you win - will not come from Neiman Marcus. I looked on their web site, and they don't have them any more. But, it will be a cool eraser, one to go along with another item in our mystery prize package later on in the alphabet.

Wow, that's original, isn't it? But I can have a lot of fun with this one. Have you taken a look at the unique bookmarks they sell these days? When I was a kid, they were just a piece of cardboard with a picture of a puppy or a kitten. No cardboard puppies or kittens in this gift basket!
